The New Futures Fund (NFF) seeks to promote and support interventions geared towards transparency, good governance and accountability. In its efforts to increase democratic participation, the focus of the NFF is on interventions that can build the role that citizens are able to play in:
-
Shifting South Africa’s political and socio-economic future
-
Bringing about systems changes by increasing participation in formal democratic processes
-
Strengthening and deepening South Africa’s democracy
The Fund does this primarily by supporting work in the following areas:
Civic Engagement
Increased dissemination of information, access to knowledge, rigorous training and upskilling – all geared towards promoting more informed citizen-led decision-making.
Public Participation
Promoting and enabling active and sustained engagement of citizens by all spheres of government and within legislatures, during and between elections.
Electoral Reform
Analysis of, and engagement on, South Africa’s current electoral system, and support of policies that enhance the country’s democracy, governance and administration.
State Capacitation
Creating an understanding of the importance that legislatures and councils play in governments that are increasingly coalition-based. Supporting interventions that focus on activating and bolstering legislative oversight, holding legislators to account and ensuring greater executive accountability and improved delivery.
